Attempt of Coup D’état
The Action: Sedition or Coup D’état
History has registered many coup d’états (coup) or attempts of coup worldwide. We learned that coups happened before and after the Christian era. Around four hundred and ten attempts are known since 876 BC. They all have one purpose in common; somebody wants to assume power and control of a government by force or any other means.
Let us look at the history (source: List of coups and coup attempts – Wikipedia). This article includes a coup d’état attempt perpetrated by Trump’s armed mob. This article lists a couple of coups in the United States.
Cases of Coup D’état
1689: Boston Revolt: In an action described by some as a “putsch”, the Puritan militia, assisted by a Bostonian mob, arrests Sir Edmund Andros. Andros was the unpopular governor of the Dominion of New England.
2020: 2020 Venezuela coup attempt: unsuccessful attempt by Venezuelan dissidents and an American private military company, Silvercorp USA, to infiltrate Venezuela by sea and remove Nicolás Maduro from office in Venezuela.
2020: After the November 3, 2020 US Presidential election, the campaign to re-elect Donald Trump has attempted to have Republican governors, legislatures, federal and state courts invalidate and overturn election results in Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, Georgia, and other states,[63] on the basis of discredited vote-fraud assertions.[64] President Trump has also spoken for more than eight weeks in-person at rallies, on social media, and on television – repeating false statements that he had “won the election” and claiming that Democrats were fraudulently “trying to steal” the Presidency.[65] As of December 31, 2020, he has refused to acknowledge the election loss.[66] The transition team of President-elect Joe Biden has claimed that Trump appointees have obstructed access to national-security information.[67] On January 2, Trump was recorded attempting to force the Georgia Secretary of State to invalidate sufficient votes to give him the state’s electoral votes.[68] The President repeatedly attacked voting by mail earlier in 2020, and has appointed Louis DeJoy as Postmaster General, whose cuts to postal-worker hours and removal of collection boxes were characterized by many as an attempt to interfere with the 2020 election.[69] The Trump coup attempt has been supported by a number of Republican officials,[70] and their false claims have inspired violent street-protests by supporters including organized unofficial right-wing militias.[67][71][72] Numerous media organizations have described Trump’s actions as an attempted coup, including NPR,[73] The Washington Post,[74] the San Francisco Chronicle,[75] The New Yorker,[76] New Jersey Today,[77] Vanity Fair,[78] and many others.[79]
2021: On 6 January, violent supporters of United States President Donald Trump, some armed, stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop Biden’s votes from being counted and him being certified as the winner, during the 2020 United States presidential election Electoral College count. Lockdown and evacuation orders were given and the session was suspended. In the violent riot that followed (referred to as “the storming of the Capitol”), one pro-Trump supporter was shot and killed by United States Capitol Police and a Capitol Police officer was assaulted with a fire extinguisher and killed by the rioters. In total, 5 people were killed in the attempted coup.[80] Both the Senate and House chambers were breached, as well as the offices of several members of congress, including Nancy Pelosi’s.[81] The international community immediately reacted, with world leaders and the NATO secretary-general[82]calling for calm.
Sedition
Trumps’ mob intended to stop the confirmation of the president elect, Joe Biden, and vice president elect, Kamala Harris. They took over the US Capitol, intending to capture some legislators, perhaps Schumer, Pelosi, Mike Pence, the vice president. The mob’s chanting clearly said, “hang Pence, hang Pence.” If the mob’s purpose was to depose of the elected persons, to maintain Trump in power, the action was an attempt of coup d’état, confirming Trump’s intention to remain in power at any cost. Then the insurrection or sedition, was an attempt of coup, that failed. The constitutional laws must apply, and the congress have the duty to remove Donald J. Trump from the presidency.
